ABSTRACT.
The pomegranate (Punica granatum) was presumably introduced in Uruguay by Spanish immigrants during the XVIII century. The type of pomegranate introduced was ?Mollar?, with yellow rind, pink and sweet arils with medium hard seeds being used mainly for self-consumption. The need of new alternatives in fruit growing has promoted new developments with this crop. Since 2008 in a joint project between the private sector and the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA), with the support of the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII), more than 50 cultivars of diverse origins were introduced and the first commercial plantations were implanted with ?Wonderful? plants. Most of the varietal introduction was made from the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository, Wolfskill, USA, of selected cultivars by Dr. Gregory Levin. These cultivars were introduced in the form of cuttings and multiplied in vitro after adjustment of protocols. With these plants, assessment blocks were installed and some of the cultivars were selected for commercial plantations. The results of in vitro multiplication were not equal for all cultivars, having some that were easily propagated while others had fairly low propagation rates. The first commercial
plantations of ?Wonderful? were introduced in the spring of 2009 and planted in a tree spacing of 4 by 2 m (1250 plants/ha); harvesting of the first fruit took place in the fall of 2011.

RESUMEN.
Desde que surgió la posibilidad de incorporación de eventos transgénicos en el cultivo de arroz, el sector arrocero uruguayo ha manifestado una posición contraria a los mismos. Este trabajo busca aportar elementos cuantitativos para la identificación de posibles trayectorias tecnológicas para el complejo arrocero en Uruguay, frente a esta nueva realidad. El impacto potencial del cambio técnico generado por la aparición de variedades transgénicas en arroz se evaluó utilizando un modelo de equilibrio general computable, aplicado al comercio internacional. El shock tecnológico sobre la economía en su conjunto y los patrones de comercio fue simulado para 12 regiones, 8 sectores y 5 factores de producción. Se evaluaron 4 escenarios para reflejar posibles modificaciones en las preferencias de los consumidores frente a la comercialización de variedades GM. Se revisaron las interrelaciones de los agentes con otros sectores de la economía y otros países, estimándose la magnitud y dirección del impacto ocasionado, a través del concepto de variación equivalente (VE). Los resultados sugieren que la adopción de arroz GM en Uruguay conllevaría una pérdida de bienestar en este país, por cambios en los patrones de consumo en los países importadores. El impacto real podría ser mayor aún al estimado debido a que la participación de la UE como destino para el arroz uruguayo se ha incrementado sustancialmente en los últimos años. Sin embargo, la potencial liberación comercial de arroz resistente a herbicidas en Brasil abre un nuevo escenario y genera interrogantes sobre la sostenibilidad de la posición uruguaya a largo plazo.
SUMMARY.
Since the possibility of incorporating transgenic events in rice crops emerged, the Uruguayan rice sector has stated a position contrary to GMO. This article attempts to provide quantitative elements for identifying potential technological trajectories for the rice complex in Uruguay, facing this new reality. The potential impact of the technical change generated by the emergence of transgenic varieties in rice was evaluated using a general equilibrium model applied to international trade. The technological shock on the economy as a whole and on international trade patterns was simulated for 12 regions, 8 sectors, and 5 production factors. The study assessed 4 scenarios to reflect changes in consumer preferences facing GM varieties in the market. The relationships between agents with other sectors of the economy and other countries were reviewed, estimating the magnitude and direction of the impact, through the concept of equivalent variation (EV). The findings of this research suggest that the adoption of GM rice in Uruguay produces a welfare loss in the country, due to changes in consumption patterns of consumers in importing countries. Moreover, since the EU became an important destination for Uruguayan rice in recent years, the real impact could be even higher than the impact estimated in this study. However, the potential release of the first commercial GM herbicide-resistant rice variety in Brazil opens a new scenario, raising questions about the sustainability of the Uruguayan position in the long run.
